The vocabulary of international transport, explained simply. Search a term to find its definition.
- AWB
- Air Waybill — the air transport document issued by the carrier or agent, acting as the transport contract and receipt of goods.
- B/L
- Bill of Lading — the sea transport contract, receipt of goods and document of title.
- CMR
- Consignment note for international road transport of goods, governed by the CMR convention.
- Code HS
- Harmonized System code: the international customs classification code of a product.
- Consignee
- The consignee: the party receiving the goods, named on the transport documents.
- EORI
- Unique identification number for economic operators in their customs operations within the EU.
- ETA
- Estimated Time of Arrival at destination.
- ETD
- Estimated Time of Departure.
- First Mile
- First mile: moving goods from the supplier to the departure point of the main carriage.
- Fret
- Freight: the goods carried, or the price paid for their carriage.
- Incoterm
- ICC rule defining how costs, risks and responsibilities are shared between seller and buyer.
- Last Mile
- Last mile: the final delivery to the recipient.
- Packing List
- Packing list detailing goods, packages, weights and dimensions of a shipment.
- Poids brut
- Gross weight: total weight of the goods with packaging.
- Poids net
- Net weight: weight of the goods alone, without packaging.
- Shipper
- The shipper: the party sending the goods, named on the transport documents.
- Shipping Plan
- Shipping plan gathering route, modes, dates, contacts and costs of a shipment.
- Tracking
- Tracking: following the location and status of a shipment along its journey.
- Transitaire
- Freight forwarder: organises international transport and formalities on behalf of the shipper.
- Volume
- Volume: the space occupied by the goods, often in m³ (or volumetric weight).
