What is a freight forwarder and when to use one?
The freight forwarder orchestrates your international transport. Understanding their role helps you know when — and how — to work with them well.
Their role
The freight forwarder arranges the movement of goods on behalf of the shipper: booking transport, coordinating segments (first mile, main carriage, delivery), documents and sometimes customs formalities via a broker. They don't carry the goods themselves, they orchestrate.
When to use one
Using a forwarder is useful as soon as transport gets complex: several segments, several modes, customs, or simply a lack of time and in-house expertise. For a simple, regular flow, some manage directly with the carrier.
Working well with them
A good dossier makes a good quote: the clearer the information you provide (goods, packages, weights, volumes, Incoterm, addresses, dates), the more accurate and faster the quote. Structuring this upfront avoids back-and-forth and extra costs.
