How to buy on Alibaba with confidence

Before ordering, take time to qualify the supplier: years on the platform, displayed statuses (verified supplier), reviews and transaction history, and above all a direct exchange. A video call and a sample request often tell you more than a product page.

Be wary of abnormally low prices and rushed contacts. Ask for real photos, any certificates, and clarify the minimum order quantity (MOQ) before going further.

Put everything that matters in writing: product reference, specifications, quantity, unit price, production lead time, packaging and Incoterm. A sample validated before mass production avoids nasty surprises.

For payment, prefer mechanisms that offer protection (for example escrow / Trade Assurance) rather than a full direct transfer. A deposit at order and the balance after inspection is a common scheme.

Many first imports get complicated for lack of thinking about transport upfront. Set the Incoterm knowingly: EXW leaves everything to you, while FOB (goods loaded at the origin port) is often simpler to start with. Collect the HS code, origin and value of each product from the outset.
